Genre Notes
What is a genre?
A genre is a category of media. It contains pre- conceived notions of content, conventions of a genre to make it recognisable as a gene. Film makers benefit when their target audience is of a wider range because more people will want to watch it. Marketing and doing promotion to a certain target audience means that the specific target audience are more likely to watch it, generating a lot of money. The audience also benefits because they know what they expecting from that movie when they see the advertising, and have also seen previous movies from the same director who is known for making good films for that genre. This is called ‘genreloyalty’ which means that specific audience are likely to go back for more (the sequel or more movies from that director/producer). Members of the audience are often reflected in the characters from the movie and most will project their ego onto them and get actively involved, especially men. A genre is a series of expectations which help to find an audience and help the audience interpret the film.
Hybridisation
Hybridisation is where two different types of genre come together to make a 'hybrid'. For example, when a film has aspects of a horror and a thriller it will be a hybrid genre; it would be called a horror-thriller. A hybrid can be made of any two genres as long as the genres have been incorporated into the film/movie. By merging two genres together it creates a wider target audience for the film makers to aim their movie at, this creates more profit for the film makers and directors because they are going to have an audience that are fans of two different genres, not just one genre.
