Question 5
How did you attract/address your audience?
I know my target audience will like my media product because I have taken into account all the feedback I received from both of my detailed questionnaires that was carried out by my target audience only. The answers, ideas, comments and preferences have been incorporated into my media product specifically to appeal to my chosen target audience. My target audience told me they believe that the best horror-thrillers give the idea of kidnap and murder so I made sure that this element was included in my media product to appeal to my target audience. The age and demographic of my target audience will like my media product because I chose the cast specifically so that the audience will be able to relate to the characters as they will all be around the same age. I decided to choose music for my media product that is similar to music in other horror-thrillers. The typical music in horror-thrillers is chosen for a reason, it helps build up the tension and without it the footage would have half the tension and scare factor than with the music. My target audience said they like to be kept on their toes so I wanted as much tension in my media product as possible, this is why I stuck with the typical style of music that is usually in horror-thrillers. Also to build up tension I placed my titles in between different shots using a variety of fading techniques. This will appeal to my target audience as it will bring a sense of relief from the tension, and then give the opportunity to build it up again which is what they like in a horror-thriller. Originally I planned for the antagonist to be an older male playing the protagonists Dad, however, I decided that my target audience will enjoy my media product more if the whole cast was made up of teenagers, so then they have more chance of relating to the characters. So, instead I chose a 17 year old to play the protagonists ‘friend' as well as the princess role’s ex-boyfriend, bringing a motive for the kidnap/murder and an element of jealousy that is a common emotion amongst teenagers, making it more appealing to my target audience as they will be able to relate to the characters more. I think this change was successful as I got many positive comments on my casting choices in my audience feedback. Before the princess/female character gets attacked I used a slow motion editing technique to increase tension for the audience, and also so that they get more engaged in my media product. They will become more engaged and emotionally attached to my media product at this stage simply because it has been slowed down and there is still nothing they can do to help the victim, all they can do is watch and wait for the tension to finish. My target audience will like this because they said they like a lot of tension in a horror-thriller hybrid. My target audience told me that the victim should be a blonde, short girl who looks extremely vulnerable with no chance of survival. I took this comment on board and casted the princess role as a 16 year old blonde female.
Overall, I think my target audience will like and enjoy my media product because I have listened to all their comments and ideas and I have incorporated as much of it as I can into my media product. Even if I had varied preferences from my target audience I either compromised somewhere in the middle or I included both aspects, keeping the majority of my target audience as happy and as entertained as possible when watching my media product.
